Begin with the traffic profile
A useful interconnection discussion starts with the traffic that needs to be carried. Intended destinations, expected volumes, call types, and the source of traffic influence both technical planning and commercial evaluation.
Document the lawful purpose of the service and the responsibilities of each party. A shared understanding of permitted traffic is as important as a compatible signaling configuration.
- Identify destination requirements and expected traffic patterns.
- Explain the originating service and how customers are authorized.
- Agree escalation contacts and operational responsibilities.
Separate connectivity from quality
A successful SIP connection establishes a path for signaling and media. It does not by itself establish the suitability of a route for a particular business use. Codec support, IP authorization, media handling, capacity, and failover behavior should be tested against an agreed plan.
Quality indicators need context. Answer-seizure ratio describes the proportion of call attempts that are answered, while average call duration measures the average length of answered calls. Post-dial delay concerns the time from completing dialing to the caller receiving progress or answer signaling. Customer behavior and destination characteristics can affect these indicators.
Agree an onboarding checklist
Before production traffic begins, confirm commercial terms, test destinations, reporting expectations, and a process for investigating discrepancies. Decide who can approve configuration changes and how incidents will be escalated.
This guide is a general planning resource. Route availability, numbering permissions, and regulatory requirements must be established for the actual parties, services, and jurisdictions involved.
- Validate signaling and media with controlled test calls.
- Review call detail records and billing definitions together.
- Define an initial traffic plan and a review point.
